This is one of a number of engravings from Captain Cook's Exploration Books of the Pacific Ocean. He explored the west coast of North America from 1776 until his death in Hawaii in 1779. It was common in the 18th Century for explorers to include artists, botanists and other experts on their ships to record events, sights and people. This and the next two images were originally in black and white; we have added the colour.
